Panic attacks are sudden feelings of terror that strike without warning. They are generally brief, lasting less than ten minutes, although some of the symptoms may persist for a longer time. Panic attacks are the result of high levels of anxiety where the adrenalin and physical affects of the anxiety are not 'used up' by appropriate reactions such as the 'fight or flight' fear response. 
Panic Attacks are sometimes caused by our reactions to traumas, whether accidents or health traumas. Panic attacks are common, affecting as many as 10% of the population in a single year. They are frightening but fortunately physically harmless episodes. Panic attacks can occur at any time of the day or night and are so disturbing that many people have been rushed to emergency medical centres, since panic attacks are often mistaken for heart attacks or seizures. However, panic attacks are not known to affect the heart or precipitate a heart attack.
These attacks can occur at any time, even during sleep.
