Some find it easy to relax, others have much more difficulty.
The following simple instructions will help you to relax quickly and easily as it takes no more than about 10 minutes. And the more you practice relaxation, the easier it becomes.
1. Sit or lie down somewhere where you are unlikely to be disturbed for approximately 10 minutes. Make yourself as comfortable as you can.
2. Take a deep breath and hold it for a couple of seconds, then release it as slowly and steadily as you can. As you slow down your breathing in this way your body automatically starts to relax.
3. Take another deep breath and hold it for a couple of seconds, only this time as you slowly release the breath gently close your eyes.
4. For the next couple of minutes concentrate completely on relaxing your eyelids. The eyelids have some of the smallest muscles in the human body and are therefore the easiest to relax. Allow your eyelids to relax as fully as you can and imagine them becoming heavier and heavier over your eyes.
5. When you feel your eyelids are nice and relaxed, picture and feel the relaxation in your eyelids spreading across your entire body, from the top of your head to the tips of your toes, in a flowing wave of gentle relaxation and comfort.
6. Imagine this relaxation in your body doubling.
7. Now on each outward breath say inwardly to yourself the word 'relax' without moving your throat or tongue, your lips perfectly still, your breathing pattern unaltered. On every outward breath just think to yourself 'relax' and feel the stress and tension leaving your body.
8. As you continue to breath normally, thinking 'relax' on each outward breath, picture your body slowly relaxing one part at a time. Starting with your head and face, moving down through your neck and shoulders into the arms, hands and fingers. Let all the tension flow away from your body. Next move on to the back and spine, the chest, stomach, waist and hips. And finally down through the legs and into the feet and toes. Each step of the way let your body relax deeper and continue to think 'relax' on each outward breath.
9. When you feel completely relaxed just enjoy the sensation and allow any thoughts that may appear to just drift quietly on their way, without analysing them. Then, when you are ready, slowly open your eyes, take a short while to stretch and revive yourself and then move on with the rest of your day, feeling relaxed and energised!
